Is it worth leaving the airport on a layover?

If you have roughly five hours or more between flights, yes — the city centre is only 25–35 minutes away, and you can leave bags in airport left-luggage. With a private taxi you skip queues and spend your limited time actually seeing Barcelona, not working out public transport.
